Users can set custom colors for UV seams or islands – seams are now also shown in the 3D viewport – and there are color-coded overlays that show overlap between islands and UV distortion. There are also a number of general improvements to the way Cinema 4D handles UVs, including a more consistent workflow between the UV editor and the 3D viewport.Ī new “uniform 3D and UV polygon mode” enables the changing of geometry and UV elements, whereby changes are displayed in both views. UVs: Improved display of UV seams and islands, new iterative UV unpacking workflow In the Cinema 4D implementation, topologically sensible UV seam placement and an efficient UV packing are to be achieved, at least in the relatively simple model for hard surfaces shown in the video above. Quel Solaar describes his algorithms as "thinking" like an artist, whereby the system recognizes "over 20 different types of topologies" and each approaches differently. The heading changes in a new automated UV unpacking and UV packaging system, which is based on the game-oriented Ministry of Flat technology from Quel Solaar and is also available as an independent tool. One of the most important is a revision of the software's outdated UV unpacking tools, which users have been demanding for several versions. Since only six months have passed since R21 was shipped, the online change log for Cinema 4D S22 is shorter than for previous major updates, although it does contain some important features. UVs: New automated UV unpacking and packaging system This suggests a new biannual update schedule, where subscriber spring updates are one of the regular big annual updates from Maxon that are usually delivered at the beginning of autumn. Maxon describes the release as "early access" to new features, with perpetual license holders accessing it later this year through a major update: probably Cinema 4D R22. With the launch of the new unified product pricing that was introduced with Cinema 4D R21 last year, the company has focused heavily on subscriptions, although perpetual licenses are still available. The first subscription-only version of Cinema 4D starts a new update cycleĪs the new version numbering implies – the "S" stands for "subscription release" – Cinema 4D S22 is the first update of the software that is only available to subscribers. The features announced during the keynote for Maxon's virtual NAB 2020 event will be introduced later this year for perpetual licensees. Maxon has released Cinema 4D S22, the first subscription-only update to the 3D animation software that reworks the UV toolset, introduces the new viewport architecture, and restores the GoZ bridge to ZBrush.
